Jersey Boys - 10.02.2009
Jersey Boys, the next big musical to hit Melbourne in 2009 needed impact for its launch. It was to be all about projected images, an MC who can talk under water, with a bit of live performance. With the client wanting a widescreen solution, CVP was approached to make the dream a reality, and to ensure a seamless event. Utilizing the complete range of services we offer clients, we were asked to production and stage manage the event, provide the video solutions and create the footage!
We created the footage in one of our High Definition edit suites ensuring the imagery and video had the impact the client needed. We created animated logo’s and backgrounds, key message videos in the custom widescreen format, as well as edited existing video packages.
For the event itself CVP installed 3 x12K and 2 x 10K projectors driven by our Wings Platinum playback system. The main image was 25m wide by 5m tall and acted as one large playback field. Content was played both using the complete screen area as well as having normal ratio footage inserted as picture in picture windows. The surround sound playback (also designed by CVP) was also handled by the Wings Platinum System. The video content had both looped and fixed length playback (sometimes simultaneously) all of which was handled with ease. Screen surfaces were large CYC’s provided by Staging rentals.
We used our normal broadcast quality OB kit which has a purely SDI signal path to ensure amazing live camera images. The live camera mix was then scaled by an Eventix into data to merge it with the Wings Platinum system enabling us to fade the live camera’s mix on and off the screen independently of the playback cues.
The whole system gave us flexibility to change things quickly during rehearsals and react to unexpected changes during the event itself. By having the production management in-house ensured that all other aspects of the event worked cohesively with the projection which was the main medium being used to communicate with the audience. In-house stage management ensured that the show content was designed for easy and flexible playback, an important, often overlooked, aspect of shows with complex video requirements.
By utilizing the wide and varied skill set at CVP, a highly successful, stress free, event was staged.
